There are many reasons for this booming rate of literacy in the United States. First and foremost, a lack of literacy skills results in a lower quality of life. People who can’t read are less likely to participate fully in society and have fewer opportunities than those who can read. They’re also more likely to experience health problems such as obesity and heart disease because they don’t understand health information or know how to take care of themselves.
Lack of literacy also has negative consequences for employment rates. In fact, one study found that nearly half of all unemployed adults lack basic reading skills. This means that they’re not eligible for many jobs – including positions that would traditionally require Literacy skills such as nursing or education assistant work – which further restricts their options.

Growing up in poverty made me acutely aware of the importance of literacy. I saw first-hand the impact that literacy has on individuals and society as a whole. Most poverty and other social ills can be linked to a lack of education and literacy. I have committed myself to help promote literacy and ensuring that everyone is given access to quality education.
To achieve this goal, we need to support initiatives like the Basic Education Campaign (BEC) which was launched by President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2017 with the aim of providing free basic education for all children in Nigeria by next year. However, without the support of governments and non-profits alike, these goals will be difficult to reach. Literacy project initiatives need to be supported by both governments and non-profits alike if they are going to improve access to basic literacy for all.
I have been involved in various literacy programs over the years and am always keen to teach others about the power of learning. My dedication to literacy and education has enable me not only me but also my family members who were also raise in poverty, to access quality education which has changed our lives for the better.
